Daniel Abt was left feeling “shit” after a regen issue on his ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport car cost him a shot at his maiden Formula E victory or a possible podium finish in New York on Saturday.
Abt qualified second before making a perfect start to jump into the lead, spending the first 15 laps out front before being passed by Sam Bird.
Abt lost another place to Jean-Eric Vergne before the car swaps and was unable to keep chase, instead coming under pressure from Stephane Sarrazin for third place in the closing stages.
A regen issue caused Abt’s car to shut down and run wide at the hairpin before nearly colliding with title-fighting teammate Lucas di Grassi. The German ultimately failed to finish, ending Saturday empty-handed.
When asked by Current E how he felt after the race, Abt said: “Shit. That’s all I can say.
“I don’t know, I had a few issues already with the car, especially on the second car I had power cuts which was a bit weird.
“But still we were in a position to at least take a podium here which would have been good points. Still good, and then last lap my car shuts off with a battery failure or whatever. It’s annoying.”
While Abt took heart from his pace that put him in contention at the front of the pack, he could not hide his disappointment after seeing another podium chance pass by.
“It’s always good to be up front, but it’s even better to finish up front,” Abt said.
“I don’t know why this always happens to me, so many times. It’s just really annoying because in the end people forget what happened.
“They look at the points outcome and the table, and I’m nowhere.”
