Sam Bird will start the second New York Formula E race from pole position after edging out Felix Rosenqvist by just 0.037 seconds in the final stage of Sunday’s qualifying session.
Bird became the first driver in motorsport history to win a race in the five boroughs on Saturday as he led DS Virgin Racing to its first victory of the season, beating Jean-Eric Vergne.
Bird made it through to Super Pole with the fourth-fastest time, but was able to edge clear of the field with his second run with a best lap of 1:02.285.
Mahindra’s Felix Rosenqvist bounced back from a difficult Saturday that saw him finish outside of the points after a spin to qualify second, narrowly missing out on his third Formula E pole.
Vergne featured in Super Pole once again for Techeetah, taking third place ahead of weekend rookie Pierre Gasly, who had topped the initial heats for Renault e.dams. Nick Heidfeld completed the top five for Mahindra.
Maro Engel narrowly missed out on a place in Super Pole for Venturi, qualifying sixth ahead of Oliver Turvey and Daniel Abt. Lucas di Grassi had another quiet qualifying, finishing ninth, while Tom Dillmann rounded out the top 10 positions.
