A fault with the on-board fire extinguisher has cost Sebastien Buemi a five place grid penalty for the Marrakesh race.
We asked Renault what the issue was and a spokesperson explained that the fire extinguisher was found to be empty after examination. The extinguisher uses Co2 gas so there is no weight advantage; it seems a broken part or fitting is to blame. The car was found to be 3.25kg underweight as a result.
It’s a pretty major safety issue and the team has asked that drivers or teams be given some sort of way to assess the state of the system during track runs, such as a dash light or a sensor which can relay critical information via telemetry.
The penalty means that Buemi will start the Marrakesh race from P7 instead of P2; his demotion promotes third-placed Sam Bird to the front row.
