Lucas di Grassi sent out an early warning shot to Formula E championship rival Sebastien Buemi by topping the opening practice session in Montreal on Saturday morning.
Di Grassi heads into the title showdown trailing Buemi by 10 points, but remains relaxed about his chances, believing he has little to lose.
The ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport driver wasted little time in displaying his pace through practice, turning in a full power 200kW lap in FP1.
Di Grassi recorded a fastest lap time of 1:22.461 to finish over a second clear of the pack as the rest of the field opted against showing its hand early, although Buemi seemed to be struggling with his car, perhaps with a brake balance or regen set-up issue.
New York winner Sam Bird continued his good form by finishing P2, leading the 170kW runners for DS Virgin Racing. Former teammate Jean-Eric Vergne was third for Techeetah ahead of the Renault e.dams pair of Sebastien Buemi and Nicolas Prost.
