Lucas di Grassi believes that the ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport team remains the underdog in the title battle with Renault e.dams, despite the driver currently sitting top of the drivers’ championship standings.
Di Grassi bounced back from disqualification in Mexico to win the Long Beach round three weeks ago, lifting himself to the summit of the championship ahead of Renault’s Sebastien Buemi.
“It has been a very, very successful year for ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport,” di Grassi said today in a press conference ahead of the maiden Paris race. “In six races we have crossed the line six times, on the podium. Still, we don’t have the fastest car. I’m just able to finish the races and get as many points as I can. So I take every race as a new race.”
Just as in season one, di Grassi and Buemi look poised to duke it out until the very last race in London, with the ABT team also in contention for the teams’ title. With less than half the season remaining, the Brazilian insisted that he wasn’t yet eyeing the title: “I’m not thinking about the championship at the moment. There are still so many points left. I will take exactly the same approach as I did since the beginning of the year, which is concentrate on trying my best at every weekend. I think we are the underdogs.”
Di Grassi and Buemi are the only drivers to have appeared on the podium more than twice in 2016 and are separated by just a solitary point at the top of the standings.
