Antonio Felix da Costa will compete for Amlin Aguri in Putrajaya next month, according to team principal Mark Preston. “Antonio is okay for the next race,” Preston confirmed to Current E.
Felix da Costa also races in DTM, where a schedule clash caused him to miss out on the opening Formula E fixture in Beijing. Although it was widely expected that Amlin reserve driver Fabio Leimer would line up on the grid in the Blue Samurai, Japanese driver Takuma Sato was announced as a last-minute replacement instead.
Since then, not much has been heard about the young Portuguese driver, and his name has been removed from the official Formula E listing of driver names. Felix da Costa is also a reserve driver for the Red Bull F1 team, and the second Formula E round clashes with the final F1 race of the 2014 calendar. That won’t be an issue, says Preston: “We’ve just confirmed that he has a leave of absence from Red Bull duties in Abu Dhabi.”
Felix da Costa is widely expected to be particularly competitive in the Spark-Renault, but coming into the series late means he’ll have to measure up against team mate Katherine Legge, whose popularity won her a Fanboost nomination, and Sato, who set the fastest lap of the Beijing race.
Reserve driver Leimer is no slouch either: he’s last year’s GP2 champion and he has several Formula E testing sessions at Donington Park under his belt. Whether he’ll be present in Putrajaya is another matter however. “When we got to Beijing we realised that no other teams brought reserve drivers,” said Preston. “We’ll probably take Fabio, but we may not. The race is still a month away.”
