Postcards from Punta

As December draws to a close, the Current E trackside team has swapped the cold, damp and early nightfall of Europe for the deep blue seas and radiant sunshine of Uruguay’s coastal paradise, Punta del Este.

“If you’ve not made it to Uruguay before, we’d highly recommend it,” says Current E editor Ross Ringham. He’s heading up the journal’s travelling team that includes photographic whiz kids Shiv Gohil, Dan Bathie and Marta Rovatti Studihrad.

“It was definitely my favourite venue of the first season,” Shiv says. “The light was perfect, the atmosphere was relaxed and the culture is fantastic.”

The team landed in Uruguay on Monday, leaving three clear days of sightseeing and exploring to do before work commences on Thursday. “We’ve had a team on the ground at every single Formula E race, from the very beginning of the first season,” Shiv explains. “We have a set schedule for our clients that means we shoot all through paddock preparations on Thursday and Friday, as well as covering all the activity on Saturday.”

Tuesday was spent in Montevideo, a city of vibrant character, eclectic architecture and South American charm. “It’s an easy journey to make from Punta del Este,” says Ross. “There’s a frequent coach service which takes around two hours but only costs about a tenner with the exchange rate. The route takes you from the heart of Punta to the middle of Montevideo. Easy.”

While there, the team had lunch at the restaurant Lucca, which we highly recommend. “Fresh food, cooked to perfection and excellent service,” says Shiv. “The interior reminded us a lot of a trendy Shoreditch bar.”

Wednesday was spent at the beach, with work being completed with a cold drink in one hand. “We like to check our camera settings, equipment and software on Wednesday so we’re prepared to start work in earnest on Thursday,” says Shiv.

Here are some of Dan’s snaps from the past few days.
